About Irka Perez
Irka Perez, born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is now a Boston-based photojournalist. She often photographs with non-profit organizations like Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, where she briefly served as their Communications Coordinator.
“I love being able to combine my love for the Boston Harbor and my passion for photography while capturing valuable moments of communities on the waterfront.”
She obtained her Bachelors degree in Journalism at Emerson College with minors in Photography and Enviornmental studies in May of 2023. As a student, she served as the Editor-In-Chief of Emerson College’s multilingual magazine, Raíz. Her photos appeared on the cover of the magazine’s 9th and 12th Editions.
In May of 2022, her documentary series In My Shoes, was awarded Outstanding Photo series during Emerson College’s 41st Annual EVVY Awards.
In 2018, she submitted her image titled Dandelion Dreams to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, winning a National Silver Medal. That same year, Perez visited Haiti and created her first photo series titled Haiti is Beautiful. In 2020, she wrote her first article inspired by Haiti’s poverty-tied single story, which was published in The Intersectionalist Magazine.
Her love for photography and the environment to create work that raises awareness towards sustainability and the effects of climate change on certain world populations are what inspires her.
